What is an Annual Fire Safety Statement?

An Annual Fire Safety Statement is a document that certifies that all fire safety measures within a building have been assessed by an Accredited Practitioner (fire safety) and are capable of performing to the required standard. This statement must be submitted to the local council and the NSW Fire Brigade each year.

Who is required to submit an Annual Fire Safety Statement?

The requirement to submit an AFSS applies to owners of buildings that are subject to fire safety measures. This includes:

  • Commercial properties
  • Industrial buildings
  • Residential apartment complexes
  • Public assembly buildings

Essentially, if your building has fire safety measures installed, (such as fire alarms, emergency lighting, or fire extinguishers) you are likely required to submit an AFSS annually.

Steps to comply with AFSS Requirements:

Engage a Fire Safety Assessor (FSA): A FSA is responsible for assessing each fire safety measure to ensure it functions correctly.

  4. Submission of the AFSS: Once assessments are complete, the AFSS must be submitted to the local council. Additionally,
    a copy should be prominently displayed within the building
